EPCOT Center Logo pins

As a Disney pin collector, there's a satisfaction that comes with finding that last pin you need to complete a set. And as a finicky collector, the pins I'm drawn to are few and far between- so when I find a set I love, and I can complete it? That's cause for celebration. My favorite pin set probably doesn't come as a surprise to regular readers: the EPCOT Center Logo pins.

Released in April 2015 as part of the Hidden Mickey Cast Lanyard series, these vintage Epcot icons have everything I love in a pin design- clean crisp styling, bold color, classic graphic design, symbols or signage rather than characters, and of course- they're vintage Epcot. The icons represent the original Epcot Center logos, including Horizons, Journey Into Imagination, CommuniCore, The Land, and The Living Seas.

I collected this set over the course of several visits. Ironically, I had to go to the other side of the country- to Disneyland- in order to find the last remaining pin I needed to complete the set. As I was scurrying through Disney's California Adventure on my way back to the Disneyland Hotel, I spotted The Land pin on the lanyard of a custodial worker sweeping up near the gates. When I approached him to trade, he told me he had just received it about an hour before, and he had no idea what it was.

You never know when you'll come across that final pin to complete a set.

What do you think of the Epcot icon pins? Are you into pin trading at the parks & resorts?

Our #DisneySide @ Home Celebration

I received promotional items for participating in this campaign. All opinions are my own.

Everyone can use a little bit of that Disney magic between visits, right? The #DisneySide @ Home campaign allowed us to do just that- and we had a blast!

I applied to host a #DisneySide @ Home Celebration a few months back, through a campaign being run by Mom Select and Disney Parks. In exchange for receiving a party planning kit, I agreed to share my experience on my blog and social media channels.

Half of the excitement was waiting for the party planning box to be delivered! As soon as it arrived, we got right to work planning all kinds of celebratory details for our #DisneySide @ Home event. The kit contained activity ideas, decorating supplies, giveaways for our guests, and more.

My sister and her family came to town to help us celebrate. As I wrote about in this party planning post, the visit was a big deal! These people are not only our actual family, but they're our Disney family as well- and we had not all been together in the same place at the same time since a trip several years ago to Walt Disney World.

When deciding on the theme for our party, my mind kept going back to one of our favorite parts of any Disney vacation: pin trading. I knew I wanted to incorporate this special activity into our celebration.

In addition to our main pin trading idea, we planned Disney-themed food, recreated a few special dishes and park/resort experiences, and played party games.

Without further ado, here are some of the highlights from our celebration...

Pin trading:
We are big fans of pin trading in this family! My nieces and nephews are especially adept at it, having taken to it immediately during their first big whole-family trip. The excitement of the hunt, the interaction with Cast Members, and the satisfaction of building sets and collections are all part of the magic for us. Every one of us- young and old alike- gets into pin trading. In advance of our celebration, I ordered a few sets of authentic park pins to give out as prizes and to share with everyone for trading fun. My sister's family packed up their pins and brought their collections to town for the celebration. All sorts of trades were made during the party- a few sets were completed, and my sweet niece even made sure I ended up with a very special pin that I had my eye on from her collection.

Recreating favorite experiences from parks & resorts:
As I've shared previously, my daughter and I once had a very magical experience with a Cast Member creating silhouettes in the Magic Kingdom. The silhouette booth was one of the special experiences we recreated for our party. Instead of cutting silhouettes, we traced them. A bright photography light shining on sketch paper allowed us to create silhouettes almost as special as those found on Main Street.

Another attempt at recreating a favorite was a visit to Senses Spa... at-home style! While my dining room was far from a duplicate of this luxury indulgence, a little imagination combined with a great masseuse-in-training really did provide a relaxing break from the day's excitement.

Food:
I tried my hand at recreating a few of our favorite Disney foods- the Smoky Portabello Soup from Artist Point, and the Nutella & Fresh Fruit Waffle from Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square. In case you couldn't tell (ha!), the authentic Disney dishes are in the the top photos below, and my attempts are on the bottom...

We also made some Mickey pretzels and rice krispie treats...gluten-free style. One of our guests was gluten-free, so I made gf versions of pretzels and krispie treats. The results were...mixed. Everyone pretty much agreed that these treats looked a lot better than they tasted. Both were fine immediately after they were made, but when revisited later in the party- rock hard.

Activities and Games:
A set of Hanes t-shirts was included in our party planning package, so I attempted a Mickey head tie dye project I found online. Once again, mixed results. I suppose they weren't bad for my first attempt at tie dying in decades, but the Mickey heads on some of the shirts came out looking more like hearts than heads. Fun, though- and great quality shirts.

Our main game was Disney Bingo. These cards have great photos, divided into categories such as parks, characters, attractions, and resorts.

As fun as these photos were to peruse, I'm not sure the design was right for an actual game of bingo. There wasn't a whole lot of variety between the cards, so due either to the card design or a massive coincidence- 5 out of 6 players called Bingo all on the same call...twice. Fortunately, we had lots of little giveaways to award all the prize winners!

All in all, our #DisneySide @ Home Celebration was a great success! We had a fantastic time reliving some of our past park experiences, and planning for new ones to come. Special thanks to Mom Select and Disney Parks, for including me in this campaign! Everyone is encouraged to plan their own #DisneySide @ Home Celebration- visit disneysidecelebrations.com  for ideas!

Plussing the tree...

Christmas: I'm a sucker for the nostalgia, the sentimentality, the childhood memories. I'm one of those decorate-early/leave-the-tree-up-late people. I've always wanted to put up a tree the day after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the rest of my family does not share this early enthusiasm.

Last year, in the midst of post-holiday clearance sales, they bought me a little artificial tree for my office. It was a perfect idea! I could put it up as early as I wanted, and the big family tree downstairs could wait until the rest of the crew was ready.

I put up my tree shortly after Thanksgiving, but I forgot that I would need special decorations. Small ones.

Then, it hit me!

PINS. This was quite the stroke of genius for me- it was a perfect solution. I have piles and bins and lanyards of pins, and I'm always trying to find something fun to do with them. By myself. (The sad life of a pin trader living far from WDW...)

They are the ideal size for my tree, I can switch them up at will, and I get to actually look at them brightening my tree all day long!

How do you get your WDW fix for the holidays? Tell us about it in the comments...

Mystery Solved: Kismet in Disney's Polynesian Lobby

While pin trading in Epcot last summer, I came across a pin I had never seen before. It was a classic Mickey head shape, but with an odd color scheme and design that I didn't recognize. I thought it looked really interesting, so I traded something for it and put it on my lanyard, intending to look it up online to find out what it was.

The next day, I was meeting family members in the Polynesian lobby before heading over to the Spirit of Aloha dinner show. We decided to take a few photographs in the beautiful Grand Ceremonial House, with the tropical foliage as a backdrop. There were some other guests taking a long time in the spot we wanted, so we reluctantly moved around to the other side of the lobby to look for a new photo spot. There was only one small area without a crowd, so we walked over to it to secure a spot for a few family photos. Just as my husband was about to start snapping pictures, something caught my eye. I looked down at the stone work on the floor...

...and spotted this incredible Hidden Mickey, which I never knew existed. It's now one of my favorites.

Pin mystery solved!

The perfect end to a long weekend getaway....

You know that bittersweet feeling on the last day of your trip, when you want to soak in every last possible drop, but you have that looming sadness as the clock ticks down to your way-too-early Magical Express pick-up time? That's where I was yesterday. But a sprinkling of unexpected pixie dust made my last moments magical...

I spent the last hour of my trip doing one of my very favorite  things- strolling the World Showcase in Epcot. I was at the Canadian pavilion when I realized it was time for me to head to the International Gateway and make my sad walk out for the final time. Just as I was passing the large gate to the backstage area (Millenium Village/World Showplace) between Canada and Great Britain, the gate opened to reveal Ariel in her ball gown. A Cast Member invited me over to come in and say hello. After chatting and taking a few photos, I walked out and heard them close the gate behind me. As I make my way through Great Britain, I see my destination in the distance. But wait! Now I'm  face to face with Mary Poppins, in her beautiful red travelling coat. I've always wanted to meet Mary, and there she was, with no line, as I was on my way out! After that meeting, as I walked down the hill towards the exit, my phone buzzed with an incoming message- a well-known personality in the Disney community was now following me on Twitter! How cool is that? Now it was really time to go. I reach the International Gateway, and as I say my final goodbye to the Cast Member at the turnstiles...and I look down to see that she has the completer pin I've been searching for all weekend! This all happened in the final 10 minutes of my visit. Pixie Dust is real.
